Dear colleagues,
Two years ago, on the occasion of the anniversary on November 17, I highlighted the role of the academic community in facing the social, political, environmental and security challenges encountered by Czech society and by the broader circle of civilization to which we belong. Viewed from a distance, the severity of these challenges unfortunately has not diminished, quite the contrary. Systemically significant armed conflicts, the rise of political populism and other disturbing socio-economic trends continue to frame our present day.
We have to take even better care of the proper functioning of the academic community. Academic land is, or at least should be, a unique space that provides a background for critical reflection and discussion and dialogue based on expertise. It is in our deep interest that it does not become just another arena for politically or ideologically heated emotional shouting that unfortunately consumes the public and media space.
It is our responsibility to respect and support a diversity of perspectives. But we must insist that it is a multiplicity based on scientific knowledge, not opinion. We must bear the demands placed on critical discussion, including the readiness to accept opposing positions and recognize their relevance. However, for such a discussion to be academically valuable and beneficial, it must respect the high demands we place on it. As in other cases, freedom cannot be cultivated without responsibility and respect for shared rules.
In view of the disturbing trends that are also manifested at the faculty, let me wish all of us for this year's anniversary on November 17, determination in the defense of academic freedoms, respect and reverence for other members of the academic community, and the necessary dose of inspiration to see us through the challenges, which we as academics and society face.
PhDr. JUDr. Tomáš Karásek, Ph.D.
